An Australian medicinal cannabis strain has been discovered that does not contain the psychoactive ingredient in the drug known as ‘Herbal Medicine Brooklyn’.
The discovery has sparked speculation about its long-term effects on users, as well as the future of cannabis prohibition in Australia.
Key points: Cannabis strains can be found in every state in Australia, but some are found only in the northern hemisphereThe discovery was made in Queensland, where a strain of the herb has been identified as the first cannabis-based medicinal plant in the world to be made from cannabis plant extracts and not resinA Queensland researcher says the strain has a high potential to be useful in the treatment of severe nausea and vomiting symptoms Professor David Tompkins, from the Queensland Department of Health and Medical Research (DHMRC), has been researching medicinal cannabis strains for a decade.
He said it was a “major breakthrough” that made him “very excited” about the potential of the new strain.
“This strain is an interesting blend of cannabinoids that are known to be anti-cancer, anti-infectious, anti inflammatory and anti inflammatory, among other things,” he said.
It is known as a cannabis indica, with the compound known as THC being the active ingredient.
Professor Tompkin said he had noticed a recent surge in demand for the cannabis plant oil, and it was important to get the right strains right.
The medicinal cannabis plant has been in demand since the mid-1980s, and is used by some of the world’s most respected researchers in the field of cannabis science.
But it has long been controversial.
In 2016, a federal court ruled that recreational marijuana was illegal in Australia and the cultivation of cannabis for recreational purposes was a crime.
Since then, the cannabis industry has seen a boom, with cannabis companies being sold in more than 20 countries, including the United States.
Many of those countries have restrictions on the production, sale and use of cannabis, and many states have their own laws that limit the amount of cannabis a person can grow.
Some states have legalised the production and sale of recreational cannabis, while others have no restrictions.
Queensland, with a population of just over 100,000, has the second highest cannabis cultivation in the country.
According to the Marijuana Taxation Amendment (Amendment) Bill 2016, cannabis cultivation would be legalised for the first time in the state, and all medicinal cannabis cultivation was banned.
Under the legislation, the cultivation, sale, and use would be licensed under the cultivation licence scheme, with no restrictions placed on the number of plants or the age of plants grown.
Cannabis growers would have to register with the department, which would have the authority to inspect the facilities.
DHMrc said cannabis could be grown in two stages, with one stage being a “quick-release” production facility, where all the cannabis would be stored.
A second stage would be a “stable” production site, where the cannabis plants would be “mined” and the product would be shipped to a laboratory to be tested.
Mr Tompys said the strain was not known to contain any psychoactive compounds, and he was “pretty sure it will be safe for people to use”.
“We’re not seeing a lot of people coming to us with any problems, and that’s fantastic for us, because it’s been a long time coming,” he added.
As part of the research, Mr Tompetts also tested the strain in a controlled environment using a variety of different strains.
They were able to create a strain with a lower THC concentration than the strain currently used by the recreational cannabis industry.
Currently, CBD (cannabidiol) has no psychoactivity, meaning it does not produce the effects of the psychoactivity of THC, or ‘high’.
But CBD has a wide range of uses, including treating anxiety, depression, and pain, among others.
Prof Tompinks research is supported by the National Health and Medicines Research Council (NHMRC).
