NEW YORK (AP) Medical marijuana is helping to boost sales of herbal medicine and barberry herbal remedies that are widely used in India and Nepal, the United States and other developing nations.
Medical marijuana is used by millions of Americans and is now legal in New England states, where it has been used since 2014.
The herbal products sold at dispensaries in New Hampshire and New Jersey include herbal and barberries.
They can be mixed with water and given in capsules.
In Massachusetts, which voted to legalize medical marijuana in 2012, the market for herbal products surged in 2015.
In 2017, sales in Massachusetts jumped 11 percent to $6.4 million, according to the Massachusetts Department of Consumer Affairs.
In the District of Columbia, which has legal medical marijuana, sales rose 10 percent last year to $4.3 million, said Chris Hickey, director of sales for the department.
Sales of herbal products are booming in Colorado, where medical marijuana has been legalized, and California, where the state legislature has passed medical marijuana bills.
